Stop Running Someone Else’s Race

Episode Summary

What if the way you measure business success has less to do with revenue and more to do with how your life actually feels?

In this episode of The Building Well Podcast, Amanda sits down with operations and business strategist Faith Morris for a candid conversation about scaling a business without allowing growth to consume everything around it. Faith shares how being rejected by the traditional job market ultimately led her to help build her husband’s stonemasonry business, launch her own operations business, and discover a talent for creating the systems and structure businesses need to grow sustainably.

But this conversation goes well beyond operations. Faith opens up about raising two young children while running two businesses, the strain entrepreneurship placed on her marriage, her tendency to move quickly, and why she is intentionally learning to build with more spaciousness. She also explains why context switching may be exhausting mothers more than their actual to-do lists and why defining your vision for your life should happen before deciding how big you want your business to become.

Faith’s perspective is a reminder that building well is not about avoiding hard work. It is about knowing what the work is supposed to make possible.

3 Key Takeaways

Success Needs a Definition Beyond Revenue

Faith is intentionally measuring success by whether she has spaciousness in her days, can spend extended time with family in Australia, move her body regularly, attend her children’s events, and transition between the different roles in her life without constantly rushing. Revenue still matters, but it is only one small part of the picture. When your definition of success includes the life you want to experience, your business decisions have something more meaningful to answer to.

You May Not Be Tired From the Number of Tasks

One of Faith’s most compelling observations is that the exhaustion many entrepreneurs, especially mothers, experience is not always caused by the amount on their to-do lists. It can come from constantly switching between business owner, parent, spouse, household manager, and everything else demanding attention. Creating margin between those roles and learning how to triage what actually requires your attention can make a significant difference in how you feel at the end of the day.

Slowing Down Does Not Mean You Have Lost Your Ambition

Faith naturally moves quickly and credits some of her success to her willingness to implement, test, and refine without waiting for perfection. At the same time, she has realized that her health, nervous system, family, and businesses cannot operate at constant speed. Learning to run a slower race for longer-term results means separating genuine ambition from the pressure created by comparison and fear.

Guest Bio

Faith Morris is an operations and business strategist who works with online service providers with teams of one to five people. Her work focuses on helping founders understand their role, vision, team structure, and the systems their businesses need to operate sustainably while creating more time for life inside and outside of work.

Before launching her online business, Faith spent approximately eight years working in aged care and disability services in Australia. After moving back to the United States and struggling to reenter the traditional job market, she helped build the backend operations of the New Jersey stonemasonry business she owns with her husband. That experience became the foundation for her work helping other founders audit, pause, implement, and build businesses designed for long-term growth.
