When Motherhood Gets Harder Than Business and You Learn to Let Go

Episode Summary

What happens when building a business is no longer the hardest part of your life?

For Detroit-based entrepreneur Robin Kinnie, the challenges of raising teenagers, maintaining a marriage, leading a team, and protecting her personal well-being have required just as much growth as entrepreneurship itself.

In this episode of The Building Well Podcast, Robin joins Amanda Magho to share how she transitioned from doing everything herself to building businesses that allow her to prioritize what matters most. As a serial entrepreneur, co-owner of an audio production studio and training school, and creator of the More Than Business initiative, Robin has learned that business growth means very little if you're too overwhelmed to enjoy the life you're creating.

Their conversation explores the realities of raising teenagers while running a business, learning to trust others with responsibilities, and building systems that make room for family, personal interests, and rest.

Robin also shares why she measures success through experiences that have nothing to do with revenue, how she structures her week around her family, and why entrepreneurs need to stop treating their own happiness as an afterthought.

This conversation is a reminder that building well isn't just about what your business accomplishes. It's also about the person you're becoming and the life you're able to live along the way.

3 Key Takeaways

Parenthood Can Challenge You in Ways Business Never Will

Despite years of entrepreneurial experience, Robin openly shares that raising teenagers has been harder than she expected. Parenting has pushed her to become a better communicator, confront parts of herself she might otherwise overlook, and learn how to listen rather than simply give instructions. Her experience highlights how personal growth and business leadership often influence each other in unexpected ways.

Delegation Creates Freedom Beyond the Business

Robin recalls editing projects with her newborn beside her before realizing that doing everything herself was preventing both personal and professional growth. Her business began growing when she learned to delegate, trust her team, and focus on the responsibilities where she could contribute the most. That same philosophy extends into her household, where clearly defined responsibilities and family support make room for the life she wants to live.

Your Personal Well-Being Should Be a Measure of Success

Robin challenges the idea that business success should be measured exclusively through revenue, hiring, or other traditional metrics. She intentionally tracks personal experiences, from spending time with her daughters to trying new hobbies, and creates evening routines that help her disconnect from work. For Robin, a successful business should provide the freedom to enjoy life rather than become another obligation that consumes it.

Guest Bio

Outside of her professional work, Robin is a mother of three, an avid reader, and an active volunteer who serves on boards and supports youth development initiatives throughout the Detroit community.
